The Yorkshire Coast offers one of England’s most varied coastal landscapes, where sweeping bays, fishing towns and rugged cliffs combine to create a shoreline of strong regional character. Stretching along North Yorkshire’s North Sea edge, it is associated with wide sandy beaches, dramatic headlands and historic seaside settlements, making it a long-standing destination for rail travellers seeking both scenery and heritage.

The artwork presents Cayton Beach from an elevated grassy slope, opening across golden sand, shallow tidal water and a calm blue sea. Dark cliffs frame the far side of the bay, while small built elements along the shore add scale and a sense of habitation. Warm sands and cool sea tones are balanced to emphasise openness, light and distance, giving the image a spacious, panoramic feel that suits this stretch of the Yorkshire coast.
