About this print

York’s medieval character is nowhere more vividly preserved than in The Shambles, where narrow lanes and timber-framed buildings lean toward one another across the street. Once a working market quarter and now one of the city’s most recognisable historic thoroughfares, it offers a rare sense of enclosure and continuity, with centuries of daily life still legible in its architecture.

This composition captures The Shambles after dark, when warm shopfront light and deep shadow transform the lane into a richly atmospheric passage. The overhanging upper storeys create a dramatic vertical rhythm, while the narrowing perspective draws the eye toward the distant glow at the street’s bend. Reflections in the glass and the contrast of amber and midnight blue lend the scene a quiet theatricality. The print evokes York at its most intimate and evocative — historic, immersive and alive with evening character.

Choose Your Finish

For a contemporary look, choose our Modern finish, produced on 230gsm smooth matte paper for crisp detail and refined colour.

For a classic look, choose our Vintage finish, carefully aged and printed on a traditionally made 310gsm matte etching paper from German paper experts Hahnemühle. Its subtle texture enhances depth and lends the artwork the presence of an original railway poster.

Both are available in six frame options.
